ADHD & Stress: A comparative Analysis

This study examines the perceived stress levels of neurodiverse employees, particularly those diagnosed with ADHD, compared to neurotypical employees. The Perceived Stress Questionnaire (PSQ) was utilised to confirm that neurodiverse individuals, especially those with ADHD, experience significantly higher levels of stress, particularly in areas such as Worries, Tension, and Demands. The study emphasises that neurodiverse employees often engage in “masking” behaviour, to conform to workplace norms, causing an increase in stress and burnout risk. The findings show empirical evidence of significant stress levels which underscores the need to address specific stressors and support with accommodations. The research highlights the challenges that neurodiverse employees face and shows gaps and potential benefits of neurodiversity training which would foster inclusivity and reduce stigma in the workplace. Future studies are recommended to explore physiological stress markers and broader neurodiverse populations, as well as the long-term effects of neurodiversity accommodations on job satisfaction.
